Manual Handling

Lifting or carrying, pushing or pulling

Employers have to take reasonable steps to reduce as far as reasonably possible the need for employees to lift or carry anything by hand which could risk injury.

This could include providing mechanical assistance for performing such tasks (eg lift assists, pallet trucks)

Once they have reduced the need to manual handling as far as possible but it still cannot be avoided, employers have to provide adequate training in how to do so safely.

Sometimes, the machinery, lifting or moving equipment introduced to reduce manual handling itself creates a risk of or causes injury.

Injuries often include shoulder, arm or back injuries.

The lifting equipment must then be maintained in a safe condition otherwise it can cause other injuries (see Machinery and Equipment)
