Industrial Disease
We specialise in the following areas of work related illness.
1. Vibration White Finger.
2. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
3. Industrial Deafness/ Tinnitus
4. Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).
5. Asbestosis/Mesothelioma.
Vibration White Finger
Vibration White Finger is also known as Raynauds Phenomenon. Common early
symptoms are tingling and numbness in the fingers. There may be aching
in the wrist and muscles of the forearm. As the condition progresses there
may be a sensation of reduced grip strength and attacks of "whiteness"
in the fingers when exposed to the cold. The most common cause is occupational
exposure to vibration.
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This condition can often exist with that of vibration white finger. Studies
suggest that use of vibratory tools can cause the condition. However it
may arise as a result of any continuous repetitive movement of the hand,
such as keyboarding. Common symptoms are pins and needles, numbness and
pain affecting all of the hand. The symptoms can cause sleep disturbance.
Industrial Deafness / Tinnitus
Exposure to high levels of noise can cause damage to the inner ear which
results in deafness. Common symptoms are an inability to hear when there
is background noise. Whistling, ringing and buzzing noises in the ears
are often complained of by persons with noise induced hearing loss. The
term for these is "tinnitus". In the mildest form it may be
infrequent. However, it can be constantly present and can lead to clinical
depression.
Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)
This is a general term for a number of conditions that result from repeated
movements. Examples are:
1. Tennis Elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
2. Golfers Elbow ( medial epicondylitis)
3. Tenosynovitis of the wrist.
4. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
It especially occurs in industries involving rapid repetitive twisting
and gripping movements.
Asbestosis / Mesothelioma
Asbestosis is a form of lung disease caused by exposure to asbestos. There
is a usually a long period between exposure to asbestos and the development
of symptoms, usually over 20 years. Common symptoms are breathlessness
and a persistent cough.
Mesothelioma is a tumour of the lining of the lung often due to asbestos.
As with asbestosis, there is a long period between exposure and the development
of symptoms. Many cases develop 30 years (plus) after exposure. Common
symptoms are breathlesness, chest pain and a presistent cough.
Accidents at Work
If you have ever been injured at work then you may be able to claim compensation
for your injuries and other losses. Health and Safety laws place rather
strict duties upon employers to provide a safe working environment. Your
employer may even be liable if you are injured as a result of another
workers negligence. Helpful tips include:
1. Make sure that you report the accident. Your employer should have an
accident book.
2. If there were any witnesses obtain their details.
3. You need to take legal advice as soon as possible as the law provdes
a 3 year time period from the date of the accident to issue your claim
in court.
Road Traffic Accidents
If you have been injured in a road accident either as a motorist, passenger,
motorcyclist, cyclist, or pedestrian then you may be able to claim compensation
for your injuries and other losses.
To make a claim you must prove the other party was at fault.
If the third party is not insured you can claim compensation from the
Motor Insurers Bureau.
If the third party leaves the scene and cannot be traced you may also
be able to claim from the Motor Insurers Bureau and in certain circumstances
the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.
Helpful Tips Include:
1. If there were any witnesses obtain their details.
2. You need to take legal advice as soon as possible as the law only provides
a 3 year time period from the date of the accident to issue your claim
in court. |
